A scattering of farms, a Domesday church and open fields — the quiet little corner of Herefordshire we call home.
Much Cowarne appears in the Domesday Book, sits on an old Roman road, and once heard Edward Elgar cycling its lanes. There's no shop and no rush — just orchards, hedgerows, a beautiful medieval church, and some of the best doorstep walking in the county. Here's what's right on your doorstep.
Not to scale, but drawn north-up like a real map so it lines up with the one below. The gold band is our lane; dotted lines are the footpaths; the grey band is the busier A465 you cross for the sunflower track.
A short stroll to St Mary's, the village's medieval church — a Norman tower, ancient tombs, and usually open to step inside. It's the little walk we do most.
Head up the lane towards Burley Gate and, just past Tan House Farm next door, a footpath opens onto big fields — the best place to let the dogs run, when the sheep aren't grazing.
Follow the lane towards Burley Gate to its end (about 2km), cross the busier A465, and head down the farm track — lined with sunflowers in late summer.
Straight across the road from us live two very friendly donkeys. They adore a carrot — bring a couple along and you'll make firm friends (the children love it).
