The county city on the River Wye — a great cathedral, cobbled lanes, a proper high street and riverside walks.
Hereford is our nearest city and an easy day out — grand history and small independent pleasures side by side. Here are the places we always send guests to, in the order we'd wander them.
Walk around the cathedral — and if you can, time it for when the choir is singing; it's spine-tingling under those arches.
Alongside it, the Mappa Mundi & Chained Library museum holds the largest surviving medieval map of the world and the biggest chained library anywhere. (Ticketed; usually closed Sundays.)
Take the cobbled climb of Church Street on your way to the cathedral — bunting overhead, little independent shops either side.
Stop for a coffee and a cake along the way, and don't miss the flower shop — it's a picture in every season.
The striking black-and-white Jacobean house standing on its own in High Town — a free little museum inside, and one of the most photographed buildings in the county.
Our favourite city stroll: down to the river and along past Castle Green to Bishop's Meadow, with the cathedral rising behind you. Flat, pretty, and lovely with the dogs.
Bishop's Meadow, with the cathedral tower beyond
A few more of our go-tos, for coffee, a good dinner, a browse or a swim.
A lovely café on Widemarsh Street with a beautiful interior — brunch, good coffee and wholesome food. Our pick for a slow city morning.
The Bunch of Carrots for a riverside pub meal, The Beefy Boys for award-winning burgers with the kids, The Bookshop (Good Food Guide) for something special, or Castle House for a smart night out.
All the names — Primark, Next, H&M, M&S and more — plus independent shops threaded through the old lanes and the Maylord centre.
Pure Gym for a quick session, or Wye Leisure — a private members' club with gym, pool and sauna you can get into by booking a spa treatment.
Hereford is about 25 minutes from the farmhouse. There's easy parking around the centre (the Old Market and Maylord car parks are handy for the cathedral and the shops), and it's a flat, walkable city once you're in.
